Backend Engineer (Contract)

Company / Role Overview

We are partnering with a fast-growing, product-driven technology company to hire a Backend Engineer to support the development of scalable services powering modern web and mobile applications. This role sits within a collaborative, cross-functional environment where engineers work closely with product and design teams to deliver impactful features. Beyond coding, this position requires a strong product mindset—understanding how backend systems contribute to user experience, performance, and business outcomes. This is a 12-month contract with strong potential for extension, offering the opportunity to work on meaningful, user-facing systems at scale.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and develop scalable, high-performance backend services using Go, with a focus on reliability and maintainability
• Build and enhance backend systems to support new product features and evolving business requirements
• Contribute to backend architecture decisions, ensuring systems are efficient, scalable, and aligned with engineering best practices
• Collaborate closely with product managers, designers, and other engineers to deliver high-quality product improvements
• Monitor system performance and implement optimisations to improve reliability, scalability, and response times
• Ensure adherence to security best practices and maintain high standards of system integrity
• Participate in code reviews and contribute to a strong engineering culture focused on quality and continuous improvement

Job Requirements

Must-Have:

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience
• Minimum 5 years of backend engineering experience in building production-grade systems
• Strong proficiency in Go, with hands-on experience developing scalable backend services
• Experience working with cloud infrastructure, preferably AWS
• Solid understanding of backend fundamentals, including data structures, algorithms, system design, and networking concepts
• Experience designing and building APIs and backend services for web or mobile applications
• Strong problem-solving ability with a product-oriented mindset
• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, collaborative environment

Good-to-Have :

• Experience working with relational databases such as MySQL
• Exposure to modern data processing tools (e.g. analytical or embedded databases)
• Familiarity with security best practices in backend development
