Data Engineer / FS / $2,500 –$3,800 USD P/M / 12 Month Extendable Contract

About the Role

We are looking for a motivated Junior Data Engineer to join a major data transformation initiative for our client, a well-established Canadian insurance leader. This 12-month freelance contract offers the opportunity to gain hands-on enterprise-level experience by building, maintaining, and optimizing data pipelines in a cloud-based environment. You will work alongside an international team, contributing directly to systems that support critical business operations.

Responsibilities

• Assist in designing, building, and maintaining efficient and reliable ETL/ELT data pipelines.
• Extract, ingest, and transform data from various sources into cloud-based data storage solutions.
• Perform data cleaning, validation, and quality checks to ensure accuracy and usability.
• Document data processes, pipeline designs, and data dictionaries clearly.
• Monitor pipeline performance and assist in troubleshooting and resolving data issues.
• Collaborate with data analysts and other engineers to understand requirements and deliver effective data solutions.

Required Skills & Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, or a related field.
• Strong proficiency in Python for data processing and automation.
• Excellent SQL skills for complex querying, data manipulation, and optimization.
• Hands-on experience or strong familiarity with at least one major cloud platform( AWS, Azure, or GCP).
• Understanding of ETL/ELT processes, data modeling, and workflow orchestration tools (e.g., Apache Airflow).
• Proficient with Git for version control.
• Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and eagerness to learn.
• Professional fluency in English and Vietnamese
• Candidates must be legally able to work in Vietnam (No Sponsorship Provided)

Preferred Skills

• Experience with big data tools such as PySpark or Apache Spark.
• Knowledge of cloud data warehouses (e.g., Snowflake, Google BigQuery, Amazon Redshift).
• Exposure to containerization (e.g., Docker) and basic DevOps practices.
• Previous experience in insurance, finance, or a regulated industry is a plus.
